The Post Graduate Teaching Apprenticeship is a powerful training option for schools to support their own staff or attract high quality graduates to train whilst teaching.

Be Strategic

You can use the Post Graduate Teaching Apprenticeship as powerful part of your overall recruitment strategy. It's best to plan well ahead to get the most out of this approach.

Firstly, you can support internal staff who have gained a degree to train to teacher through a well established and high quality training route. The Teach Beyond team are able to support your member of staff to check their readiness for application and help them through every step.

Secondly, you can use the Post Graduate Teaching Apprenticeship to draw in local graduate talent to train to teach in your school. Given that the funding grants can be generous at secondary level, the cost of employing a graduate to train in your school is much reduced. You may even be able to offer a graduate a supernumerary teacher training experience if they have less school experience.

How does the PGTA work?

Apprentices teach Monday - Thursdays for up to 15 hours per week. They can teach alone.
Friday is a study day for the apprentice which they usually undertake from home.
Schools will need to allocate a mentor to meet weekly with their apprentice teacher.
In the 3rd half term, trainees go on a 4 week contrasting placement.
Apprentices meet with Tes Institute on Wednesdays at 3pm online.
The fees for the training are usually covered by the apprenticeship levy.
There is additional grant funding for secondary schools to offset salary and training costs.

In addition to the Tuition fees usually being covered by the Apprenticeship Levy Fund, secondary schools can receive significant grants for each graduate apprentice teacher. The grants below are for January 2027. The September 27-28 grants are to be announced by the DfE.

If the subject is not listed on the left, the school usually still cover the fees via the levy fund; even if they don't pay in to that fund or have spent their entire fund.

Candidates will need:

a UK degree or equivalent
GCSE English and Maths - Grade C/4
GCSE Science - Grade C/4 (primary trainees only)
Meets residency criteria

If candidates have not get gained their GCSEs, we can advise on equivalency tests which can be completed before the course starts.
