Your way in

Bursary Routes
You will build up your teaching slowly so you won't be dropped in the deep end. To start with you, you will only observe lessons and then you will start to increase how much teaching you lead. Your mentor will be central to your development and so we have committed to their training. Their careful support is also complemented by your Pathway Tutor from the Tes Institute, through their visits each half-term.

We know that taking the step into teaching should feel possible for everyone. That’s why there are generous, tax‑free bursaries available for 2026 - paid monthly from October - to support you while you train. These are based on the subject you want to teach, not your degree.

If you want to train in a subject which is not listed such as primary, history, drama or music, there is still financial support available via tuition fee and maintenance loans for which we can advise on your eligibility.
Employment Routes – salaried, PGTA
If you’re already working in a school - or you’ve built meaningful experience in UK classrooms - this route gives you the chance to step forward with confidence. You’ll spend four days each week immersed in school life, with one day dedicated to online study that flexes around your workload and previous experience.

Your training fees are covered by your school, and as a trainee you’ll earn at least point 1 on the unqualified teacher scale.
The ITT Employment route is designed for trainees who are working in a school and want to gain their teaching qualification.
Whether you already work in a school or are seeking a school to train in, please do get in touch.
The Post Graduate Teaching Apprenticeship is an exciting route into becoming a qualified teacher. This route enables trainees to develop their knowledge of teaching whilst developing practical classroom skills as a paid, unqualified teacher in one of our placement schools.
How to Apply
All applications go through the National Apply Platform. Once submitted, we’ll review your application and invite you to a supportive, structured online interview. You’ll receive full details in your confirmation email.

Entry Requirements
The entry requirements for Schools Direct teacher training must be met by the time you start your teacher training course:

-
Bachelors Degree
-
GCSE English Language and Maths at Grade C or equivalent
-
GCSE Science at Grade C for primary teaching applicants

*Any qualifications that were gained outside of the UK are likely to require a ENIC certificate.

The Interview Process
We take care in making sure every trainee begins their journey ready to thrive.
Our interview process has two stages. First, you’ll join us online for a short teaching activity, subject knowledge checks in English and maths, and a formal interview to explore your readiness to train. Then, you’ll spend a day in one of our placement schools - observing, joining in, and often leading a short activity with pupils. It’s a chance for us to see your potential, and for you to get a real sense of school life.
Stage 1 – Online Interview

Teaching Activity – plan a 30‑minute lesson and talk us through it in 5 minutes
Maths & English Tests – two 40‑minute assessments
Formal Interview – a conversation about your readiness to train
Document Check – original qualifications and ID

Stage 2 – School Trial Day
You’ll visit one of our placement schools to observe lessons and may lead a short learning activity.
